Cordless Stick Vacuums Recalled by Electrolux Home Care Products Due to Bursting Batteries

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission and Electrolux Home Care Products, Inc. have announced a voluntary recall of the following products. Consumers should stop using recalled products immediately unless otherwise instructed.

Distributor: Electrolux Home Care Products, Inc., of Bloomington, Illinois

Hazard: The vacuum's battery can expand and burst, posing a risk of injury to the user and bystanders.

Incidents/Injuries: Electrolux has received 34 reports of incidents in the U.S. involving damage to the vacuum and surrounding property. There have been two reports of minor injuries, including swollen hands and irritation to the eyes from contact with battery powder.

Description: This recall involves 2-in-1 cordless stick vacuums with a detachable hand vacuum and free-standing charger. Units involved in the recall have 9.6-volts printed on a serial plate on the underside of the handheld unit, and the following serial numbers: 074000001 through 085100001 and 74000001 through 85100001.

Sold at: Major and independent retailers nationwide from November 2007 through March 2009 for about $100.

Remedy: Consumers should immediately unplug and stop using the recalled vacuums and contact Electrolux for a free replacement of the handheld portion which contains the batteries.

2-in-1 Stick Vac has removable handheld vacuum unit.

Consumers can confirm they have one of the impacted units by checking the serial plate on the underside of the handheld unit and noting the voltage (which must be 9.6-volts) as well as matching both the serial and model numbers provided above.

Model and serial numbers are located on the bottom of the handheld unit.

Serial numbers and voltage are found on the serial plate located on the bottom of the handheld unit.

Model number and voltage are shown on left side of the serial plate. Serial number is located in upper right hand corner.

Affected models are Pronto models EL1000A, EL1000B, EL1000BX and EL1000BZ; Precision model PE1000B and Ergorapido models EL1005A and EL1006A within the serial number range 074000001 through 085100001 and 74000001 through 85100001.
